Water heater installer hiring checklist
Use this before you sign a quote for a water heater install, replacement or repair in California.
Before you call
- Note your current unit's type (gas, electric, tankless), size in gallons, and age (often on the label).
- Take a photo of the unit, its venting and the area around it.
Check the contractor
- Get the CSLB license number and look it up at CSLB Check a License.
- Status should be active, with a C-36 Plumbing classification for plumbing work.
- Check that a bond is on file and the workers' comp status (insured or exempt).
- Make sure the business name on the quote matches the CSLB record or a listed DBA.
Get it in writing
- Unit brand, model and size, and the warranty length.
- Labor, haul-away of the old unit, and any venting, gas or electrical work.
- Who pulls the permit and books the inspection (City of San Diego, Plumbing/Gas Permit).
- Earthquake strapping, required in California (California Health & Safety Code ยง19211 (water heater bracing)).
- Expansion tank and drain pan if needed.
- Any rebate paperwork the installer will handle (TECH Clean California, Single-Family Incentives; SDG&E Rebates).
Red flags
- No license number, or one that doesn't match on CSLB.
- Cash only, with an offer to skip the permit.
- Pressure to decide on the spot.
